La Jolla, Calif. - 2018 First-Team All-Big West selection Joe Fryer continues to shine in the offseason from collegiate competition, winning the 119th Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship, the second-longest continuously contested amateur championship in the country.
Open to SCGA members following a qualifying round, the 84-player field was cut to 42 following two rounds of play. Firing back-to-back rounds of 67 and 66 to start the tournament, Fryer was the leader after the cut and never looked back, shooting a third round under par before closing out the tournament on Sunday with a two-over par 73.
Fryer won the championship by three strokes at 9-under par, holding off Ashwin Arasu of Stanford who took second at 6-under par. Corby Segal took third at 5-under par, as only ten of the 84 entrants finished the tournament under par at La Jolla Country Club.
Former winners of the SCGA Amateur Championship include four current PGA Tour professionals in Beau Hossler, John Merrick, Patrick Cantlay and Tiger Woods.
