SAN DIEGO -- Long Beach State (2-7) dropped a close one on Saturday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion, falling 74-70 against San Diego (6-2). The Beach got a monster night from senior Temidayo Yussuf, who scored a career-best 28 points and pulled down six rebounds, but it wasn't quite enough to pull off the road victory.
Sophomore Edon Maxhuni posted a season high with 19 points for Long Beach State and KJ Byers collected a career-best 14 rebounds to help lead Long Beach's effort. But Yussuf was terrific, needing just 13 shots to score his 28 points, going 10/13 from the floor and 8/10 at the free throw line. Bryan Alberts chipped in nine points and a pair of assists.
Both teams started slowly on offense, going a combined 1/14 before the first media stoppage of the night. The teams would stay even throughout the half, with a 4-0 run by the Toreros closing the opening stanza to send the teams to the locker room tied at 29 apiece.
Maxhuni and Yussuf went off after halftime for Long Beach State, combining to score 30 of Long Beach's 41 second-half points. At one point in the early stages of the half, the pair combined for 21 consecutive points for the Beach.
Unfortunately for Long Beach State, the Toreros came out scorching hot as a team and at one point converted 10 consecutive field goal attempts as part of a 15-0 run to lead 53-43 with 11:41 to go. The resilient Beach would chip away at the deficit, however, and would tie the game with a 7-0 surge, capped off by an offensive rebound and putback by Byers to tie the game at 66 with 2:17 to play.
The Beach held the Toreros without field goal over the final 4:29, but San Diego was able to convert at the charity stripe, going 8/8 at the line over the final two minutes to sneak out of their home gym with a victory.
LBSU outrebounded USD 39-34, pulling in 15 offensive boards resulting in a 15-4 advantage in second-chance points.
Long Beach State returns home for its next contest, hosting Southern Utah on Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside Walter Pyramid.
