LONG BEACH – Sophomore Shanaijah Davison set a new career-high with 34 points, but Long Beach State was hampered by foul trouble as the Beach came up just short in an 85-83 loss against California Baptist in the season opener on Friday night.
Davison's 30-point performance was the first of her career and marked the first time a Long Beach State (0-1) player recorded 30 points in a game since 2015 when Raven Benton dropped 31 in a 67-63 win over UNLV. Davison shot 51.9-percent (14-for-27) from the field and connected on 6-of-9 three point attempts to lead all scorers.

The Beach had three scorers reach double figures as Naomi Hunt (16 points) and Jasmine Hardy (14 points) joined Davison in double digits.
California Baptist (1-1) spread the wealth and saw six players record double figures led by Ane Olaeta's 16 points. Behind Olaeta were Georgia Dale (14 points), Delacy Brown (14 points), Britney Thomas (12 points), Lexy Ram (11 points), and Tiena Afu (11 points). Afu and Thomas also notched double-doubles as Afu added 10 rebounds, while Thomas contributed 15.
Long Beach State started the game off strong as the Beach shot 54.5-percent in the first quarter. At the end of the opening 10 minutes, Davison had already accumulated 15 points after going 6-for-11 from the field accounting for half of LBSU's 30 points. The Beach took a 30-25 lead into the second quarter and continued to out-shoot the Lancers.
The Beach used a 12-0 run to take a 14-point lead (42-28) over the Lancers in the second quarter, however CBU would slowly chip away at LBSU's lead before whittling it down to two (44-42) with 2:35 left in the first half. A three by Olaeta gave the Lancers their first lead of the game, 45-44, but it didn't last long as the Beach countered and took a 48-47 lead into the locker room at halftime after a jumper by Davison.
The third quarter seemed to be the turning point for the Beach as the offense went cold. Long Beach State was limited to just 15.8 percent shooting (3-of-19) from the field and made just one three-pointer on 11 attempts. The Lancers outscored the Beach 19-8 in the frame and took a 10-point lead (66-56) into the final quarter.
Despite trailing by double digits, Long Beach State showed its determination and opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run to turn the 10-point deficit into a three-point lead (69-66). From there the two teams battled each other as neither led by more than four points for the remainder of the game. A Davison layup with 2:04 left evened the score at 81-81, but Brown gave the Lancers back the lead with a layup of her own, before Dale added to score putting CBU up, 85-81 with 1:33 on the clock. Hunt made it a one-possession game with 1:09 remaining, but the Beach were unable to come any closer as they dropped the contest, 85-83.
The difference in the game was made at the free throw line California Baptist went to the line 33 times and scored 25 points from the charity stripe. Meanwhile CBU also held the edge in rebounding, 50-31.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 11 when it hosts USC at 2 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid.
