LBSU put up a challenging fight against the nation’s top team but fell to the Trojans, 13-6 on Saturday afternoon.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No 8. Long Beach State had their attempt to upset the No. 1 ranked USC Trojans but fell, 13-6. The first quarter proved to be a tough matchup between the foes and had the game scoreless after the first four minutes with sophomore goalkeeper Marwan Darwish making three big saves. The Trojans would be the first to strike first on back-to-back goals to put them up 2-0 at the end of the first. The Beach would look to respond, but USC broke out in the second quarter on a three goal run to bring their lead to 5-0. Freshman Aaron Arias would find the net first for the Beach with 2:50 left in the first half. A couple of back and forth goals would leave the game at 7-2.

LBSU commenced the second half with a couple of goals, courtesy of freshman Theodoros Pateros and senior Max Cusator to bring them within three with 5:20 left in the third. USC would breakout the game putting them in front, 11-4 at the end of the third. USC would score twice more before LBSU would respond with two goals, including a 5-meter penalty shot by junior Austin Stewart and a goal by freshman Garrett Zaan in the closing seconds of the game.

On the scoring sheet for the Beach would be Arias, senior Keegan Wicken, Pateros, Cusator, Stewart, and Zaan. A couple notables for the Beach, both Pateros and Stewart have now scored in three consecutive games, while Zaan has nailed a goal in six straight matches. Wicken has now accumulated more goals this season (18) than he did last season (16), while Stewart sits at 34 goals looking to surpass his total from last year (52) with a couple games left in the season.

The Beach will be back in action on Oct. 26, Friday at 3:00 p.m. in UC Santa Barbara as they face the No. 5 Gauchos.
