Long Beach State Set for Steve Scott Invitational
The Long Beach State track & field team makes the short trek to Irvine, Calif., to take part in the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine. The two-day meet begins on Friday, April 28 and concludes on Saturday, April 29.
About The Steve Scott Invitational
The Steve Scott Invitational will be held at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine. The invitational features more than 1,000 athletes competing on 22 collegiate teams. The event is named after Steve Scott, a three-time Olympian and six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine from 1974-78.
Schedule of Events
The Steve Scott Invitational kicks off on Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. with the men's hammer throw. The last event on Friday is the women's 5,000m Heat 2 which is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. On the final day of the meet, track events begin the day at noon with the men's 4x100m relay, while the women's shot puts starts the field events at 12:15 p.m. The meet will conclude with the women's 4x400m relay beginning at 5:30 p.m.
In the Rankings
The Long Beach State men's squad comes in ranked seventh in the West Region, while the women's team is 12th. The Beach men are the only non-Pac-12 school in the top 10.
The 49er men are also leading the nation in the men's hammer as they are ranked No. 1 with a total of 250.12m (820-07). The Beach rank second in the in the men's long jump with a distance of 30.13m (98-10.25).
Additionally, Long Beach State comes in fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men's high jump (8.28m, 27-02) and in the men's pole vault (30.13m, 67-03). Rounding out the top 10 for the Beach are the men's discus throwers who come in eighth with a total of 214.10m (702-05).
The Beach are the top Big West team in each of the above listed events.
About the Beach
Long Beach State has a total of eight student-athletes ranked in the top 30 in the nation with six on the men's side and two on the women's.
Leading the way is Kemonie Briggs who is ranked sixth in the country in the long jump with a distance of 7.99m (26-02.75).
Vincent Calhoun paces the Beach in the high jump as he owns a mark of 2.16m (7-01) to rank 21st in the nation.
The men's hammer throw has a pair of 49ers ranked in the top 30 as Robert Marlow's mark of 66.94m (219-07) is good for 21st and James Hubbard's heave of 66.23m (217-03) is 28th.
Xander Cooper vaulted his way into the top 25 with a career-best of 5.30m (17-04.50) in the pole vault to rank 24th in the nation.
Finally, Josh Carr owns the 26th spot in the country in the discus throw with a heave of 56.70m (186-00) to round out the men's top 30.
One the women's side, Riley Cooks leads the way as she is ranked 20th in the country with 5,432 points in the heptathlon, while De'Ondra Young is 29th in the nation with school-record 61.41m (201-06) in the hammer throw.

Long Beach State will kick off Big West Conference action with the decathlon and heptathlon on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6. The Big West Championships will conclude the following week with events taking place on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, This season, the Big West Championships will be held in Fullerton, Calif.
