Long Beach State Hosts Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
Coming off of a strong showing at the Big West Challenge in which the men's squad won the meet for the 10th straight year, the Long Beach State track & field team hosts the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday, April 13 at Jack Rose Track beginning at 9 a.m.
About The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate is just in its second year, but has already become a large event. This year, there are 603 participants and a total of 805 entries in the meet. It is an all-Division I meet with 30 institutions represented. The scored event will feature many athletes who are ranked in the Top 15 in the country as well as those who are in the Top 50 in the world, who are competing in the event as an exhibition.
Schedule of Events
The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate will take place on Thursday, April 13 at the Jack Rose Track on the campus of Long Beach State University. The field events will kick off the day at 9 a.m. beginning with the women's javelin and men's hammer throw. The track events will start at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay. The final event of the day is the men's 4x400-meter relay which will begin at 6 p.m.
Top-Notch Competition
The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate will feature some of the top teams in the country in No. 4 Alabama (men)/ No. 18 Alabama (women), No. 4 USC (women)/No. 11 USC (men), No. 13 Washington (women), No. 18 UCLA (men) and No. 25 Colorado State (men). Meanwhile, the Long Beach State men's team ranks 64th out of nearly 200 Division I schools. The Beach are the top-ranked school in the Big West, coming in ahead of second-place UC Irvine by a 36 spots as the Anteaters are ranked 100th.
About Long Beach State
Long Beach State heads into the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate owning seven Top 25 marks in the country. The Beach men have five athletes that are among the best in the nation, while the Beach women have two.
Kemonie Briggs kicked off the outdoor season with a career-best mark of 7.99m (26-02.75) in the long jump. For the next month, his distance led the nation and just last week he moved to number two in the country with the mark that has sustained the 1-2 punch.
Teammates Robert Marlow and James Hubbard are LBSU's top hammer throwers as the pair rank 15th and 23rd in the country respectively. Marlow's heave of 66.94m (219-07) and Hubbard's toss of 66.23m (2017-03) lead the Beach.
The Beach have two more field athletes that rank tops in the nation as Vincent Calhoun's high jump of 2.16m (7-01.00) is good for 18th, while Josh Carr's discus throw of 56.70m (186-00) ranks him 20th.
On the women's side, the Beach are led by Riley Cooks who accumulated 5,432 points in the heptathlon at the UCR Spring Break Invitational a few weeks ago to rank 13th in the country.
Lastly, De'Ondra Young set a new school record at the Big West Challenge last weekend in the hammer throw as she recorded a career-best mark of 61.41m (201-06.00) to win the event and rank 23rd in the nation.
Record Breaker
Junior De'Ondra Young has picked up right where she left off. After setting a new school record in the women's weight throw in the indoor season, Young has come back to set a new standard in the women's hammer throw during the outdoor season. Last week at the Big West Challenge, Young shattered the previous school record with a mark of 61.41m (201-06.00) to win the event. Her tally was more than 10 feet further than the second-place finisher and nearly three feet further than the previous LBSU record set a year ago by Fatima Vergara.

Long Beach State will host its final home meet of the 2017 season in the Beach Invitational. The Beach Invitational is a two-day meet which begins on Friday, April 14 and concludes on Saturday, April 15 at Jack Rose Track.
