DURHAM, N.C. - USA Baseball announced its coaching staff for the 2017 Collegiate National Team on Tuesday, featuring two representatives from Long Beach State. Dirtbags head coach Troy Buckley will join the coaching staff for the first time and serve as a pitching coach this summer. He will be joined in that capacity by Long Beach State Hall of Famer Dave Snow, who was the pitching coach for last year's team as well.
They will both be working with head coach John Savage of UCLA, who was previously announced as the manager of the 2017 Collegiate National Team.
"We are excited to have this talented coaching staff led by Coach Savage take the reins of the 2017 Collegiate National Team," USA Baseball Executive Director and CEO Paul Seiler said in a statement. "Each of these coaches have done an amazing job with their respective programs and we are thrilled to bring their leadership and expertise to our team this year."
Buckley is entering his seventh season as head coach at Long Beach State, and will get his first coaching experience with USA Baseball. In addition to being an assistant and head coach with the Dirtbags, Buckley has also been an assistant coach at his alma mater, Santa Clara, and has worked in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos minor league systems.
Snow will be making his fifth appearance on the CNT coaching staff, and second in as many years. He was an assistant in 1992 and 1996 when the Collegiate National Team competed in the Olympic Games, and was also an assistant in 1995 and 2016.
LBSU has had a player on the Collegiate National Team in consecutive seasons, with shortstop Garrett Hampson competing in 2015 and pitcher Darren McCaughan on the team in 2016. The 2017 team will train at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. before playing games against teams from the Coastal Plain League June 20-26. Team USA will remain in North Carolina and host series against Chinese Taipei and Cuba this summer.
