Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State’s own Brittany Hochevar has reached a major career milestone, winning her first AVP event in Manhattan Beach. Hochevar and partner Emily Day won the 57th Annual Manhattan Beach Open as the No. 6 seed in the tournament, taking down the top-seeded pair of Lane Carico and Summer Ross in the finals.
It was only Hochevar’s fifth time playing alongside Day, and just the second time this year, but they were able to come together for a 21-16, 19-21, 19-17 victory in the women’s final. Hochevar and Day also took down the No. 2 seed in the semifinals, picking up a 21-15, 21-19 sweep over Kim DiCello and Kendra VanZwieten.
Hochevar was a five-time runner-up in AVP Tour events, but finally broke through for her first victory on a big stage. She becomes just the fourth player ever to earn her first career win at Manhattan Beach.
Playing indoor volleyball at Long Beach State, Hochevar was a two-time All-American and a two-time AVCA All-Region selection. She earned Big West All-Freshman recognition in 1999, was second team All-Big West in 2000 and garnered first team All-Big West honors in ’01 and ’02. After playing with the US National Team from 2002-04, Hochevar made her AVP debut at Chicago in 2004.
