Long Beach, Calif. - Sophomore starting pitcher Darren McCaughan has received an exclusive invite from USA Baseball, and will take part in training camp for the 2016 Team USA Collegiate National Team. McCaughan is one of just 30 players to receive a camp invite, and will be battling for a spot on the final 24-man roster to compete internationally this summer.
This is the second straight year that a Dirtbags player has been selected by Team USA. In 2015, shortstop Garrett Hampson made the final roster, becoming the 11th player in Long Beach State history to play for the Collegiate National Team.
McCaughan continues to receive recognition for his stellar sophomore season. The Downey, Calif. native was the 2016 Big West Pitcher of the Year, and has been tabbed as an All-American by the ABCA and Collegiate Baseball. He was the first 10-game winner for the Dirtbags in over a decade, posting a 10-1 record with a sparkling 2.03 ERA in 111.0 innings of work. He allowed just 76 hits and 16 walks while racking up 84 strikeouts, and opposing batters hit just .193 against him.
This year, the Collegiate National Team will be playing all of its games overseas, from July 5-27. There will be three international friendship series, starting in Taiwan against Chines Taipei (July 5-9). Team USA will then head to Japan (July 12-17) and Cuba (July 23-27) for series against the host countries.
The training camp will be taking place across numerous locations in Southern California, and the final 24-man roster will be announced prior to July 2.
