Long Beach, Calif. - After throwing Long Beach State's first complete game of the season, a one-hit shutout against San Jose State last Saturday, sophomore pitcher Darren McCaughan has been named the Big West Pitcher of the Week. It's the second weekly award for McCaughan this season, as the Downey, Calif. native was also named Pitcher of the Week back on Apr. 11.
The righthander was in complete control of San Jose State, leading the Dirtbags to a 2-0, series-clinching win. McCaughan allowed just two Spartans to reach base, one on a hit by pitch in the first inning and the other on a one-out single in the fifth. Neither runner advanced into scoring position, and McCaughan only had to face four batters while working from the stretch. He finished with six strikeouts while not allowing a walk, throwing 74 of his 102 pitches for strikes.
McCaughan now leads the Big West in ERA (2.10) and batting average against (.186), and he is second in the conference with eight wins. McCaughan has been fantastic in keeping runners off base, compiling a WHIP of just 0.80 this season. The Los Alamitos High product has had 11 quality starts in his 13 trips to the mound, and the Dirtbags are 10-3 in games he has started.
Overall, this is the third weekly award for the Dirtbags this season. Tanner Brown was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 4 as he and McCaughan went back-to-back.
