Beach Opens Dual Play In Honolulu With Two Wins

Long Beach State picked up a pair of wins at the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational, defeating Washington and Louisiana-Monroe but falling to the hosts Hawai'i in a busy day in Honolulu. Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto won the top flight in all three matches for the Beach.

Long Beach State (11-11) opened the day with a victory over Washington (3-3). Barber and Nieto picked up a win at No. 1, 21-17, 21-17 over Cristian Jones and Tiata Scambray. Ciana Wagner and Mykah Wilson also had a big win for the Beach at No. 4, defeating Katy Beals and Justice Magraw 21-11, 21-11 in the biggest win of the match.

The Beach also picked up two more wins against the Huskies, winning at No. 3 as Kobi Pekich and Sammeee Thomas beat Lianna Sybeldon and Bailey Tanner 21-16, 21-11, while Megan Kruidhof and Morea Wagner defeated Lindsay Chalmers and Destiny Julye 21-16, 21-14.

Advancing in the tournament, Long Beach State grabbed another win in the top flight against Emily Maglio and Katie Speiler of Hawai'i (12-6), as Barber/Nieto won in three sets 21-15, 16-21, 15-13. The Rainbow Wahine won the remainder of the matches however, taking a 4-1 win over the 49ers.

Moving into the loser's bracket, Long Beach State swept Louisiana-Monroe (10-17) to stay alive in the tournament. Barber/Nieto continued their perfect day with a 21-19, 21-10 win over Hope Pawlik and Taylore/Zaeske. Jenelle Hudson and Zoi Konstantopoulou defeated Kori Simpson and Hadley Swartz 21-18, 21-19 at No. 2 and Megan Kruidhof and Morea Wagner picked up their second win of the day over Bayleigh Hoffman and Catherine Griffith 21-14, 21-11.

Play at the Aloha Invitational concludes tomorrow, as Long Beach State will try to defend its team title the 49ers won last season in Honolulu.
