LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Darren McCaughan has been named a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball , checking in as the first player listed on the second team. This is the first Preseason All-American honor for McCaughan, who received multiple All-American nods following his highly successful sophomore campaign.
This is the second straight year Long Beach State has had a player named Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball , as McCaughan follows both Garrett Hampson and Chris Mathewson, who were third-team selections a year ago.
A breakout sophomore season put McCaughan on the map, and led to his inclusion on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer. The righthander from Downey, Calif. went 10-1 in his 16 starts, posting a 2.03 ERA. McCaughan racked up 84 strikeouts compared to just 16 walks in 111 innings of work.
McCaughan, the reigning Big West Pitcher of the Year, is one of three Big West players on the second team. In total, the Big West has five athletes represented on the three All-American teams, hailing from four different schools.
