Long Beach, Calif. - For the third time this season, senior Nele Barber was chosen as the Big West Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Barber now moves ahead of LBSU legend Misty May-Treanor on the program's all-time list with seven career conference Player of the Week awards, joining Alexis Crimes, Tara Cross and Cheryl Weaver in a tie for second place.
Barber combined for 41 kills and 29 digs in two matches over the weekend, leading the Beach with match-highs both nights. The senior from Berlin, Germany, had a 20/20 performance vs. UC Irvine with 23 kills and 21 digs, becoming the first 49er to accomplish that feat since she did it on Oct. 24 of last year. Barber now has 16 double-doubles on the season and has had 20 or more kills on six different occasions.
In a sweep of UC Davis the next night, Barber totaled 18 kills to lead the match, highlighted by nine in the third set alone. She hit .333 against the Aggies and added eight digs in the sweep.
With seven Big West Player of the Week awards in less than two seasons at Long Beach State, only Danielle Scott-Arruda (9) has more than Barber in program history.
LBSU is back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as Cal State Fullerton visits Walter Pyramid, then the Beach heads to Hawai'i for a first-place showdown on Friday.
