Long Beach, Calif. - Dirtbags head coach Troy Buckley has signed a two-year contract extension to remain at Long Beach State through 2018, LBSU athletic director Vic Cegles announced today. Buckley is entering his sixth season at the Beach, tying him as the fourth-longest tenured coach in program history.
"This is an exciting time for Dirtbags baseball and Coach Buckley has provided outstanding leadership on an off the field," Cegles said. "He has a proven record of developing Major League talent and graduating student-athletes, and I am confident that with the ongoing renovations at Blair Field the right pieces are coming in place to win Big West championships and reclaim national prominence."
Buckley's teams have gone 148-133 during his five seasons as head coach, including a 34-26 record in 2014 and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. Including his eight years as an assistant coach, Buckley has been on the Long Beach State staff for 14 seasons dating back to 2001. During that time, he has coached a total of 26 players who went on to reach the Major Leagues.
"I would like to thank President Conoley and Vic Cegles for this extension," Buckley said. "I am very fortunate and grateful to have the opportunity to continue to lead this program that I am so passionate about. It is a very exciting time to be here with the start of the renovations at Blair Field and the talent of this current team and staff."
Long Beach State opens the 2016 season with a home series against Holy Cross, Feb. 19-21, and will host 11 of its first 12 games at Blair Field.
