SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked Long Beach State women's soccer team (3-1-1) played to a scoreless draw with San Diego Friday evening at Torero Stadium.
This was the 49ers' second consecutive shutout and their third in the first five games of the season.
It was an evenly played match as both squads finished with nine shots. Sophomore Jessica Vincent led the Beach with a career-high four attempts. Junior Mimi Rangel added two shots on goal, while junior goalkeeper Ashton McKeown notched a season-best five saves. It was her 12th career shutout, moving her into a tie for second in the LBSU record books.
It went back-and-forth in the first half as San Diego held a slight 5-to-3 advantage in shot attempts. Long Beach State appeared to have the first opportunity in the 12th minute when Rangel collected a through pass for a one-on-one with USD keeper Michelle Craft, but the whistle blew for an offsides call.
At the 27:33 mark, the Beach had a good look as Vincent's free kick from about 20 yards out was stopped by Craft. The Toreros' best chance came late in the period when they also took a shot off a free kick that went inches above the cross bar (42:42).
The 49ers came out attacking in the second half where they outshot the home team, 6-2. In the 54th minute, junior Celeste Dominguez found Rangel in the box, but Rangel's shot from six yards was partially blocked and saved by Craft.
Rangel had another shot on goal at the 65:39 mark, and in the 72nd minute, Vincent took a sliding attempt against an oncoming Craft, but the ball sailed just high.
The defensive intensity continued throughout both overtime periods as LBSU and USD combined for just two shots.
San Diego (1-3-1) was paced by Jacqueline Altschuld who totaled five shots, including three on frame.
This marked the second-straight scoreless tie in the all-time series between the Beach and San Diego. The two programs have now faced each other nine times since 2008. During that stretch, there have only been six goals as the teams played to three 0-0 draws, while the other six contests were decided by a 1-0 score.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, Sept. 6, when it takes on Portland State at noon.
