Long Beach State split the day after winning 12-11 in triple overtime against UC Irvine to fight for fifth place, but dropped the match to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara to finish in sixth place at the Kap7 NorCal Tournament.

The Beach started the day with a thrilling triple overtime win against UC Irvine to face off with UCSB for fifth place.

Sophomore Lee Griffin led the way for the Beach, scoring a hat trick while senior Zacchary Kappos delivered the winning goal and his lone goal. Austin Stevenson and Duncan Lynde scored two goal each, and Dimitrios Lappas, Jacob Fujioka, Chandler Kaltenbach and Troy Kaltenbach all scored a goal apiece for the 49ers.

The match started even, both squads scoring a goal after the first quarter. In the second, the Anteaters outscored LBSU to lead 4-2 at the half.

The Beach proceeded to outscore UCI in the third quarter to lead 6-5 going into the fourth. LBSU led 9-7 with 1:26 left in the fourth with a goal from Lappas, but the `Eaters' Kyle Trush scored a goal at the 1:15 mark to decrease their deficit by one.

UCI took a timeout with 30 seconds left, and junior Jared Osborn scored one of his seven goals to force the first overtime period.

Both teams were even at 11-11 after the two overtime periods, and Kappos netted the game-winning goal at the 1:28 mark of the third overtime.

Trush scored two goals for the Anteaters, and Matt Skinner and Kyle Kittlitz both added a goal.

UCI finished in seventh place to close out the tournament.

LBSU fought from behind from the very beginning after UCSB outscored the 49ers in the first quarter. Lynde scored the only goal for the Beach in the quarter.

The 49ers' Stevenson scored his two goals in the second quarter, including one with 18 seconds left along with Lovro Miocevic adding one to end the first half behind UCSB 7-4.

The Beach did a good job at playing catch-up in the second half, outscoring the Gauchos in both quarters. LBSU blanked UCSB in the third with Chandler Kaltenbach scoring the lone goal in the quarter.

Lappas and Griffin scored two more for the Beach in the fourth, but couldn't force an overtime.

Derek Shoemaker scored a hat trick for UCSB, Nick Wiley and Shane Hauschild both scored two goals each and Samer Alkateb added on goal for the Gauchos.

UCSB finished in fifth place to close out the NorCal Tournament.

The 49ers begin conference play next week with a match-up against USC at Los Angeles, Calif. on Saturday Sept. 26.
