LONG BEACH - Junior goalkeeper Ashton McKeown (Huntington Beach, Calif.) has been named the Big West Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced on Monday.
McKeown was recognized for her performance against two teams featured in the NSCAA Preseason Poll. She started the weekend off by blanking fourth-ranked UCLA as the 49ers earned a gutsy 1-0 victory over the Bruins in front of a record crowd of 2,232 at George Allen Field. It was the highest-ranked opponent the Beach has beaten in program history. McKeown finished with three saves to secure her 10th career shutout, which puts her at No. 3 in the LBSU record books.
Two days later, McKeown returned to the pitch to hold Auburn scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and one overtime period. The Tigers, who were receiving votes in the preseason poll, then snuck in a loose ball in traffic to hand Long Beach State the 1-0 loss at the 101:22 mark. McKeown, the 2014 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, still made three stops and wrapped up the season-opening weekend with an impressive 0.47 goals against average and .857 save percentage.
This is McKeown's third career Big West weekly honor.
Long Beach State (1-1-0) is back at George Allen Field on Friday, Aug. 28, when it entertains Iowa State (2-0-0) at 7:30 p.m.
