San Diego, Calif. - San Diego State's Victoria Barber converted a penalty kick in the only goal of Long Beach State's opening exhibition, as the 49ers fell on the road 1-0.
2014 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Ashton McKeown made a pair of saves for the Beach, one in each half as the balance of play remained equal for both sides for both halves. That was particularly evident through the first half, as neither side picked up a shot on goal until McKeown turned away an Angela Mitchell shot in the closing seconds of the half.
San Diego State caught a break with a foul in the box in the 60th minute, and Barber was able to convert the penalty kick to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead at home.
Following the penalty, Long Beach State pushed for the equalizer, with senior Elizabeth Lyons coming away with the best opportunity after being subbed on by Mauricio Ingrassia. Melanie Vaughn was able to turn away the shot from the senior forward however, and neither team put a shot on target for the remainder of the contest.
Long Beach State begins the 2015 season next Friday, as the Beach hosts No. 4 UCLA at George Allen Field at 7 p.m. Tickets are available now for a "Food Truck Friday" to open the season on August 21..
