LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State Dirtbags head coach Troy Buckley brought Greg Bergeron back home to the West Coast as the Dirtbags' newest assistant coach. Bergeron makes his return to Southern California where he has spent the majority of his 20-year coaching career.
"We are very excited to add Greg to our staff and welcome him and his family back to Southern California," Buckley commented. "His experience, track record and success speak for itself. Greg understands our culture and community and he will be a tremendous additive and impact for our players and program."
Bergeron comes to the Beach to run the Dirtbags' offense and work with the infielders - a familiar job for the Cerritos, Calif. native. He has spent the last 10 years running the offense for a NCAA Division I program with seven of those 10 years coming in the Big West.
"I would first like to thank Coach Buckley for giving me this great opportunity. I am absolutely thrilled and honored to be a part of the Dirtbag family and all the tradition that surrounds this program," Bergeron said. "I can't wait to get started and help build upon the foundation of success and development of young men that Coach Snow, Coach Weathers and now Coach Buckley have been able to establish here at Long Beach State."
"My family and I have been very fortunate throughout my coaching career to be a part of some special universities and baseball programs and we feel the same now. We are very happy to be back in Long Beach and are ready set roots here with Dirtbag Baseball and the Beach."
Most recently at Tennessee, Bergeron has been on Dave Serrano's staff for the past 10 years. He has spent the last four years as Serrano's Associate Head Coach at Tennessee after spending four years on his staff at Cal State Fullerton and three at UC Irvine. While at Tennessee, Bergeron directed the offense and helped lead the Vols to back-to-back SEC Tournament appearances for the first time in over a decade.
In Bergeron's four years at Cal State Fullerton, the Titans made postseason in all four years while advancing to the Super Regionals three times and making one trip to the College World Series. Under his direction, the Titans offense had one of its most successful seasons in 2010 with a .337 team batting average that ranked 17th in the country and second in CSF history.
His success in Fullerton was a continuation of the success that he also found at UC Irvine where he also helped the Anteaters to a College World Series appearance for the first time in school history. After starting as a volunteer assistant for the 2005 season, Bergeron began running the offense in 2006 with UCI topping the Big West in nearly every offensive category.
Prior to UCI, Bergeron spent eight years coaching at the Junior College level with a year at Cerritos College and seven at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. He was the head coach at El Camino in 2004 after serving as an assistant for the previous six seasons. In his seven seasons, he had 52 players continue to play baseball at four-year institutions with 30 going to Division I programs.
His coaching career began at Loyola Marymount as a volunteer assistant in 1996. He finished his playing career at LMU, earning All-WCC honors as a senior in 1994. He played his first season of collegiate baseball at Cerritos College and played his sophomore and junior seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he was the conference batting champion as a junior.
During his 20-year coaching career, Bergeron has worked with over 90 players who have been selected in the MLB Draft, including five first rounders and 10 who have advanced to the Major Leagues.
