LONG BEACH, Calif. - A 1.94 ERA while in Long Beach State's starting rotation earns some recognition. That recognition continued pouring in for the Dirtbags' freshman pitcher Chris Mathewson as he was named to another Freshman All-America team.
Mathewson was selected to D1Baseball's Freshman All-America second team. It is the fourth Freshman All-America nod for the Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He was 6-6 with a 1.94 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 93 innings pitched.
He also led the Big West in holding opposing lineups to a .187 batting average. In just his second start of the year, Mathewson held Wichita State without a hit through seven innings and fellow freshman Darren McCaughan finished out the first no-hitter in Long Beach State history.
