LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State senior Kyle Friedrichs has been named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award. Friedrichs is one of 32 semifinalists for the award that honors college baseball's breakout player of the year.
After earning All-Big West honors as a reliever in 2012, Friedrichs missed all of 2013 due to Tommy John surgery and returned to the bullpen in 2014. During the fall and early spring of 2015, Friedrichs earned the Friday night starter role and emerged as the Dirtbags' ace. He finished the year with a 6-4 record, a 2.79 ERA, 109 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 100 innings pitched.
Friedrichs concluded his Dirtbags career with All-Big West second team honors as a starting pitcher.
This is the third year that the Olson Award will be given to college baseball's breakout player. The finalists for this year's award will be announced on Friday and the winner will be announced the following week during the College World Series.
