LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State dropped it final midweek game of the season 5-0 to San Diego on Tuesday. Tristan Mercadel had two of the Dirtbags' six hits in the game.

The Toreros (31-20) opened up the game with a three-run first to set the tone for the night and added another run in the second for a 4-0 lead. Darren McCaughan relieved Ryan Cruz in the second and gave the Dirtbags (25-23) a solid relief effort to keep them in the game.

McCaughan allowed an inherited runner to score in the second but put together five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and struck out two. After four early runs, the Dirtbags bullpen strung together eight innings of one-run ball. Ryan Strufing and Logan Lombana also had scoreless relief appearances to close out the game.

Bryson Brigman had a big night for the Toreros, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Taylor Kaczmarek was lights out on the mound with seven scoreless innings. He allowed only five hits and struck out five without issuing a walk.

The Dirtbags biggest scoring opportunity came in the fourth when Garrett Hampson led off with a single up the middle and Brock Lundquist followed with a one-out single to right. However, a double play ended the inning and preserved the shutout.

Long Beach State concludes its home schedule this weekend as it jumps back into Big West action. The Dirtbags host UC Davis for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
