LONG BEACH, Calif. -- A late lead slipped away in the eighth as the Long Beach State Dirtbags suffered a 7-4 loss to Hawai'i on Friday night. The Rainbow Warriors scored six runs over the final four innings to claim the victory.
Long Beach State (23-18, 8-8 Big West) was in control through the first five innings with a 3-1 lead. After trading runs in the sixth, the Rainbow Warriors (16-26, 7-10 Big West) cut the lead to one in the seventh and scored three runs on four hits in the eighth to seize the momentum and the lead.
The Dirtbags opened the scoring with a manufactured run in the first. Garrett Hampson walked to lead off the game, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Luke Rasmussen's grounder to second.
Jacob Sheldon-Collins one-out double in Hawaii's half of the third was cashed in for a run to tie the game. In the fourth, the Dirtbags climbed back on top thanks to a two-out rally. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases before Alex DeGoti delivered a two-RBI single to right for the 3-1 LBSU lead.
Hawaii plated a run in the sixth but Hampson singled in a run in the bottom half to maintain the two0run lead. Kyle Friedrichs scattered four hits over his first six innings and allowed just the pair of runs but ran into trouble in the seventh when a double and single turned into another run for the `Bows.
The Dirtbags usually reliable bullpen faltered in the eight as Hawaii stroked three consecutive RBI singles to gain its first lead of the game at 6-4. Kaeo Aliviado's single in the ninth tacked on an insurance run for the final score.
While Hawaii scored four runs on six hits off four Dirtbags relievers, Warrior relievers Andrew Jones and Quintin Torres-Costa combined for three and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
The Dirtbags and Rainbow Warriors meet for game two of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Blair Field.
