Malibu, Calif. - Long Beach State's Anete Brinke and Tyler Jackson pushed Kellie Woolever and Kelley Larsen to a third set at No. 2, but that was the closest the 49ers came on the road as No. 4 Pepperdine defeated No. 6 Long Beach State 5-0.
Brinke and Jackson pushed Larsen and Woolever to the limit, winning a thrilling second set 25-23 to push the second flight to a third, but couldn't get over the top in 21-14, 23-25, 15-10 loss.
Seniors Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac were unable to repeat their winning performance against the Waves from the home meeting, falling in the top flight to Dykstra/Strehlow in a close match, 21-18, 21-19.
The strangest match of the day came at No. 5, where Pepperdine's Taylor Racich and Corrinne Quiggle dominated the first set, winning 21-4, but Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas recovered but couldn't quite take down the Waves, dropping the second set 21-19.
The other two matches followed the form of the day, as Jenelle Hudson and Bre Mackie fell 21-18, 21-11 at No. 3, while Asprey/Messing defeated Andrea McHugh and Ciana Wagner 21-16, 21-16.
The 49ers will try to rebound with their next dual match coming at home on Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m. against Grand Canyon. LBSU will then head to Hermosa Beach to take part in the USAV Collegiate Challenge over the weekend.
