Beach Sand Volleyball Outlasts Grand Canyon University 5-0

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 6 Long Beach State women's sand volleyball team swept Grand Canyon University at home behind strong serving. The third flight was pushed to three sets but LBSU ultimately came out with the win.
Bre Mackie and Jenelle Hudson had the closest match of the afternoon in the third flight after GCU forced a third set, but Mackie had four aces in the third set and eight overall to give the 49ers the win. The Beach won 21-18, 16-21 and 15-10. The other four matches ended in straight sets with the fourth and fifth flights giving the Beach an early 2-0 lead. McHugh/Wagner and Nieto/Thomas held GCU to single digits in each of their first sets.
Andrea McHugh and Ciana Wagner dominated GCU 21-9, 21-11 while Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas defeated the `Lopes 21-5, 21-17.
Tyler Jackson and Anete Brinke had a close match with the `Lopes, but pulled out the win over Emilee Erichsen and Molly Turner 21-17 and 21-18.
Another strong serving performance came in the first flight with Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac. Aigner-Swesey had three service aces in the first set to put the 49ers up 14-7 and ultimately winning 21-14. Behind the serving of Cabrajac, the Beach went up to a quick 7-0 lead in the second set, but GCU started to make a comeback, their closest being down three at 17-14. But a service error from Shannon Dugan ended GCU's late run, and another from Kenzie Phelps ended the match. The 49ers won the second set 21-18.
The Beach continues their busy week with the USAV Invitational at Hermosa Beach, Calif. The dual competition begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 11, and the pairs competition starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 12.
