LONG BEACH, Calif. -- For the second week in a row, the Big West Pitcher of the Week belongs to a member of the Long Beach State pitching staff. Junior starter Tanner Brown earned the distinction on the strength of his two-hit shutout on Friday.
Brown became the third Dirtbags pitcher to earn the conference's weekly award. With Kyle Friedrichs being a two-time winner, the Dirtbags have won the Pitcher of the Week award four out of eight weeks this season and all three weekend starters have won it at least once.
Brown went the distance in a 1-0 win over CSUN on Friday night. He retired 12 batters in a row after the Dirtbags scored the game's only run and faced the minimum after the fourth inning. After issuing a leadoff walk in the ninth, Brown picked off the runner at second to end the game.'
The junior from Fountain Valley, Calif. allowed just two hits in the game while striking out seven. He allowed only five baserunners the entire game and only three reached scoring position. No runner advanced past second as Brown continued to stifle the CSUN offense.
It is the first career honor for Brown, who holds a team-leading 1.54 ERA and is holding opponents to a .180 batting average. He ranks 37th in the nation in ERA and is 26th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings.
