LONG BEACH - Another successful home meet is in the books for the 49ers as they hosted the 21st annual Beach Invitational at Cerritos College's Falcon Stadium, April 17-18.
The meet has grown by over 400 percent in the last few years and is one of the major all-collegiate invitationals in the country. The 2015 edition of the Beach Invite saw over 3,000 entries with representation from 106 colleges and universities (25 states), including Pac-12 schools USC, Washington and Colorado, along with fellow Big West members Cal State Fullerton, Hawai'i, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
There was also a strong international presence with individuals from eight different countries competing as athletes from Brazil, Canada, England, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand and Spain made their way to the Beach Invitational.
With such a large and competitive field, there were seven meet records established at Falcon Stadium two weekends ago. Long Beach State also had a strong showing with three individual champions - Marina Shelton (Hammer, 195-11), Michael Montgomery (Pole Vault, 17-00) and Ryan Sanders (Triple Jump, 51-02.75).
This marked the final year of the Beach Invitational being held at Cerritos College as the meet will move back to Long Beach State's own Jack Rose Track Stadium in 2016. LBSU is also slated to host the Big West Championships next year. The new track, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to be completed in May, 2015. The 49ers had hosted the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College since 2006.
