Miscues Prove Costly As Dirtbags Drop Opener At Cal Poly

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State fell 6-1 in the series opener at Cal Poly on Friday. The Dirtbags (21-16, 7-6 Big West) made a few costly mistakes as the Mustangs (18-20, 6-4 Big West) took advantage to break open a close game.
The score was 1-1 after the first and starters Kyle Friedrichs and Casey Bloomquist traded 1-2-3 innings over the next two frames. Garrett Hampson led off the game with a triple but was caught in a pickle after a nice play at first. Luke Rasmussen later doubled in the Dirtbags run in the top of the first to put Long Beach State on top early.
Cal Poly put a runner in scoring position with a Peter Van Gansen double in the bottom half but the Dirtbags brought him home with a pair of errors to tie the game.
The miscues continued in the fourth when the Mustangs had two on and two out. Tommy Pluschkell singled in the go-ahead run before a passed ball and bases loaded walk scored two more and gave Cal Poly the 3-1 lead.
The Mustangs tacked on another run in the fifth on a triple and sacrifice fly. In the sixth, a bunt single turned into a runner on third and no outs when the throw to first went down the right field line. Another single cashed in a third unearned run.
The Dirtbags didn't get much going offensively after the first as only they only put five runner on base the rest of the way. Bloomquist went eight strong innings for Cal Poly, allowing only five hits and striking out eight. Friedrichs struck out six over six innings for the Dirtbags.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 6 p.m. for game two of the three-game series.
