LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Redshirt senior Kyle Friedrichs won his second Big West Pitcher of the Week award this season, the conference announced on Monday. Friedrichs led the Dirtbags to a series-opening win at UC Santa Barbara with a complete game shutout.
The win was Friedrichs fourth of the season and marked a career day for the Dirtbags Friday starter. He began the game by retiring the first 10 batters in order before letting go of a single. The single would be just one of two hits that the San Clemente, Calif. native would allow to the Gauchos.
UCSB came in to the game hitting .307 as a team but only mustered a pair of hits while Friedrichs struck out a career-high 13 batters in the complete game shutout. He faced just three batters over the minimum, recorded at least a strikeout in all nine frames, only allowed three balls to leave the infield on the fly and did not issue a walk.
Friedrichs also earned the award on Feb. 23 after a 12-strikeout performance against Utah Valley, making him the first repeat Big West weekly award winner of the season. He has double digit strikeouts in four of his seven starts and has tallied 61 Ks this season while only walking five.
The Dirtbags host UNLV tomorrow for a single midweek matchup and host CSUN this weekend for a three-game Big West series.
