LONG BEACH, Calif. - The early season theme continued as the Long Beach State Dirtbags defeated the NC Dinos 3-0 in an exhibition game behind another strong pitching performance. The Dirtbags sent seven pitchers to the mound to combine for the shutout.
Freshman Chris Mathewson made his first start as a Dirtbag in the exhibition contest and looked strong through three innings. He struck out one and allowed just one hit. Of the next six pitchers to trot out to the mound, only Austin McGeorge went over an inning. He pitched the fifth and one out in the sixth, fanning two and allowing only a hit.
The seven Dirtbag pitchers did not issue a walk in the game and limited the Dinos to just five hits. Only two players reached scoring position with Chang Min Mo singling and reaching third in the fifth and Min Woo Park singling and reaching second in the eighth. All five hits for the Dinos were singles.
Chris McCready got the Dirtbags going in the fourth when they did all their damage offensively. McCready tripled to right field to spark the rally. LBSU perfectly executed the squeeze play to get their first run on the board as Alex DeGoti laid down the bunt to score McCready from third.
Jonathan Serven smacked a one-out double to the wall in left center to bring in DeGoti all the way from first. With two outs, Nico Maida dropped a single into right center that easily scored Serven for the 3-0 lead.
Five Dinos pitchers limited the Dirtbags offense to just five hits and did not allow a runner past second base except in the fourth inning.
The Dirtbags jump back into nonconference action this weekend as they host Utah Valley in a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
