Jewelyn Sawyer Selected as Big West Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Jewelyn Sawyer (Paramount, Calif.) was named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Sawyer captured her first career weekly award after averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting a blistering 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the field, in wins over Pacific and Colorado. Long Beach State, which has won four in a row, improved to 7-1 on the year.
Sawyer started the week by connecting on all five of her field goal attempts for a team-best 13 points in a 68-60 victory at Pacific (Dec. 2), which has made four-straight postseason appearances. The Paramount, Calif., native added seven rebounds and three assists against the Tigers.
On Sunday, Sawyer was 6-for-8 to finish with a game-high 15 points in a 59-42 rout of Pac-12 opponent Colorado. She also had seven boards and two steals.
On the season, Sawyer leads the Beach in points (12.1), rebounds (7.0) and steals (1.4) per game. In addition, she ranks second on the team and third in the conference with a 53.6 field goal percentage.
Long Beach State (7-1) returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 8, when it welcomes San Francisco (7-2) to the Walter Pyramid for a 7 p.m. showdown.
