Long Beach, Calif. -
Saturday December 12th was the final day of a fall service event in which the student-athlete group known as Athletes For Change (AFC) were collecting used athletic shoes to fill a donation bin for the MORE Foundation Group.
The MORE Foundation Group is a non-profit organization based in Delaware, and its goal is to teach families in Africa how to farm so that they can provide for themselves financially. The shoes that they collect are sold in metro areas of Africa and the proceeds go towards funding for the training. It takes 12 months for the MORE staff to train the families, after which they receive tools, seeds, trees and livestock, in order to start off their farm.
The families are taught lessons in small farm business management, rainforest resource conservation, capacity analysis, marketing research, profit center modeling, tribal community development, and microfinance lending in order ensure that they are able to run a complete farm independently.
The AFC collected the shoes from student-athletes as well as faculty from the Long Beach State Athletic Department to fill up the box. All together they collected 50 pairs of shoes to send to the MORE Foundation group.
