IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Ashley Gonzales (Ontario, Calif.) has been named the Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
This is the third career honor for Gonzales, and the fourth weekly award for Long Beach State this season.
Gonzales carried the Beach to a 1-0 overtime win against defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton in both teams' conference opener Sunday evening at George Allen Field. She was a menace to the Titan defense, accounting for half of LBSU's 16 total shots with a career-high eight attempts.
Gonzales, who was on the brink of scoring all night, fittingly buried the golden goal at the 92:25 mark as she beat the keeper to the far post on a one-touch shot. It was her team-leading fifth goal, and fourth game-winner, of the season. Gonzales has found the back of the net in each of the last three games, increasing her career total to 14, which puts her two away from entering the program's all-time top-10.
With the 1-0 victory, the 49ers avenged last year's loss in the Big West Tournament finals and snapped Fullerton's 12-game unbeaten streak against conference opponents.
Long Beach State (6-3-3, 1-0-0 BWC) continues league play on the road this week as it heads to Cal Poly on Thursday, Oct. 8, and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 11.
