Long Beach, Calif. -
Last week, a group of 11 Long Beach State student-athletes, members of the newly formed Athletes For Change (AFC) Leadership Council, completed the first project with the new group, presenting a handmade poster with the message “ We support you!”, to the breast cancer patients in the Todd Cancer Pavilion at Memorial Care Hospital.
AFC is comprised of student-athletes who voluntarily decided to enhance their leadership skills by going through a 12-hour certified peer education training program in order be better resources for their teammates and positively represent the university’s athletic program within the community.
For the first project, the group felt it was important to do something to show support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The poster, signed by various team members from all LBSU sports, was a way to remind the patients that the Long Beach State student-athletes were thinking of them and wished them well.
In the upcoming months, AFC plans to work with the student-athlete population on various community service projects.
