Beach Water Polo Drops Second MPSF Match To UC Irvine

No. 7 Long Beach State battled but came up just short in the end, falling 6-5 to No. 8 UC Irvine in the second conference match of the season.
UCI struck first with a goal from junior Kyle Trush at the 7:19 mark. The 49ers drew a foul, and redshirt freshman Chandler Kaltenbach capitalized with an extra man goal to tie up the game. Sophomore Lovro Miocevic then grabbed a goal for the Beach with :49 seconds left to play, but UCI junior Antoine Lena evened the score at two to end the first quarter.
LBSU was blanked in the second quarter, while UCI managed to add on two more goals to go up 4-2 at the half.
Freshman Keegan Wicken added a goal for the 49ers in the 2:33 mark of the third quarter, but the Anteaters continued to score a pair of goals to lead 6-3 going into the fourth quarter.
LBSU was on the attack going into the fourth scoring early in the match with a goal by Wicken at the 7:42 mark. Kaltenbach added another one with just under four minutes left to play to cut the deficit to just one, but the 49ers couldn't find that extra goal.
LBSU blanked the `Eaters in the fourth quarter as senior Pavo Ljepopio notched 16 saves in the match. UCI senior Dylan Peterson had 19 saves.
The 49ers fall to 4-6 in the season and 0-2 in the conference. UCI is 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
