LONG BEACH - Senior defender Val Margerum (Lafayette, Calif.) has been named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Women's Soccer Team the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
Margerum, who garnered second-team recognition, is a two-year starter at Long Beach State after transferring from Oregon State prior to the 2014 season. This year, she has played a key role in LBSU's Big West-leading 10 shutouts. Margerum and the Beach defense also own a 0.69 goals against average, which ranks 32nd in the nation. In addition, that is the second-best single-season mark in program history as the 2006 squad finished with a GAA of 0.63.
On the offensive end, Margerum has totaled four shots and had the game-winning assist in a 1-0 overtime victory vs. Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 4).
Margerum, who is majoring in Design, is the first Beach women's soccer player to earn Academic All-District honors since Alex Balcer and Lindsay Bullock in 2010.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams honor the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Nominated student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average and be significant contributors to their team on the field.
Margerum is one of five seniors who will be recognized before Long Beach State's regular-season finale tonight at George Allen Field. The Beach is set to face UC Davis at 6 p.m.
