Top Drawer Soccer Women's Team of the Week
LONG BEACH - Senior defender Melanie Fox was named to the TDS Women's Team of the Week, while junior goalkeeper Ashton McKeown was an honorable mention selection as announced by TopDrawerSoccer.com Tuesday morning.
Fox and McKeown were recognized after leading Long Beach State to a Central Coast road sweep that put the 49ers in sole possession of first place in the Big West standings and gave them their best conference start since 2011 at 3-0-0.
The duo anchored a Beach defense that registered their eighth and ninth shutouts of the season with a 2-0 win at Cal Poly and a 1-0 victory at UC Santa Barbara. Fox started both matches and played all 180 minutes at center back. She helped limit the Mustangs and Gauchos to a combined 16 shots. McKeown, meanwhile, totaled 10 saves on the week and extended her shutout streak to 288:50. McKeown was also named the Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
LBSU has not allowed a goal in its three conference matches. The 49ers improved their goals against average to a league-leading 0.47. That mark also ranks ninth in the nation.
This was the second time this season that Fox has been named to the TDS Team of the Week, while McKeown earned her second honorable mention nod. McKeown was also selected to the Team of the Week on Sept. 22.
Long Beach State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 16, when it welcomes UC Riverside to George Allen Field for a 7 p.m. Big West showdown.
