Born in Montevideo, Minnesota, Bartlett competed in gymnastics at the University of Minnesota, winning a national championship in the floor routine in 1953.
After serving in the military for the Korean War, Bartlett joined the staff at Long Beach State in 1960 and spent 13 years as the head gymnastics coach with the 49ers.
Bartlett would lead the 49ers to three CCAA championships in his first three years of coaching, one state championship in 1964-65 and then a PCAA championship in his final year at the Beach, 1972-73.
Also a member of the Minnesota Athletics Hall of Fame, Barlett produced 30 conference, 18 state and three NCAA regional individual champions during his time at Long Beach State. Two of his athletes, Fred Sieburm and Don Jennings, were NCAA All-Americans.
Bartlett would retire from coaching following that season, but stayed on campus as a physical education professor for more than 30 years, finally retiring in 1997.
