Long Beach, Calif. - Mike Caffey's outstanding all-around play in Long Beach State's first two conference games was honored by the Big West this week, as the senior guard was named the Big West Player of the Week. It is the second time that the guard has won the honor in his career.
Caffey averaged 28 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.5 steals over the first two games of league action, both on the road as the 49ers toppled the preseason favorite UC Irvine Anteaters 88-82 before falling in overtime at UC Davis, 73-67.
Against the Anteaters, Caffey made five 3-pointers, and scored 27 points to help Long Beach State open Big West with a win. His effort included 19 first-half points, and two crucial distance makes down the stretch.
Two nights later, he was even better, tying a career high with 29 points along with six rebounds, five assists and five steals despite taking an overtime loss at UC Davis.
For the week, Caffey shot over 50% from the field and from beyond the arc, making 20-of-35 from the field (57.1%) and 8-for-15 from three (53.3%).
Caffey is the first 49er to win Big West Player of the Week this season, and the first since Tyler Lamb was honored on December 23 last season. Caffey is a two-time winner, previously earning the award on January 14 during the 2012-13 season on the way to the regular season title.
