Mackie, Murray Lead Beach Sweep Of Campbell

LONG Beach, Calif. - Freshman Ashley Murray and senior Bre Mackie were nearly flawless on the attack in leading the Long Beach State women's volleyball team to a sweep of Campbell in the LBSU Mizuno Invitational. The Beach (3-2) put away its first sweep with the 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 victory and won its third match in a row to move above the .500 mark.
Murray needed just 13 swings to put down 11 kills to lead LBSU in the sweep. The freshman from Torrance, Calif. hit .846 in the match to go along with five blocks. Mackie came away with 10 kills on 19 tries and hit .474. She recorded another four blocks as the Beach put up nine blocks in the sweep.
The outcome was never in much doubt during the course of the match although Campbell (3-2) took an early lead in the second set and managed to hang around until late. The Fighting Camels hit in the negatives in the first and third sets and posted a .038 hitting percentage for the match. Lorin Thomas had five kills on .200 hitting and Alexis Hein had six kills on .043 hitting to lead the visitors.
Meanwhile, the Beach attack came to life behind Murray and Mackie. LBSU hit .344 in the second set and then hit .500 in the third set to secure the sweep. Murray had a perfect second set going 7-for-7 on the attack.
Jenelle Hudson recorded a double-double for the second day in a row, distributing 31 assists and putting up 10 digs. Tyler Jackson had another 12 digs.
The Beach is back in action tonight when they take on Army at 7:30 p.m. in Walter Pyramid.
