LONG BEACH STATE TO HONOR BILL LOVELACE
Long Beach State Volleyball will honor local volleyball hero Bill Lovelace during Thursdays' home-opener. Lovelace has been a tremendous supporter of Long Beach State volleyball as well as the sport in general throughout southern California. Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro commented on Lovelace: "Bill has contributed more to the promotion of volleyball in the last 45 years than any other person in southern California. He was a player, a coach and has gone throughout southern California inspiring people to play. For the last 15 years, he has been working with young players on the beach and has produced many of the top beach players in the United States. And he has done it all for free. I, personally, would like recognize all the help he's been to everyone from adults to kids, the amount of money he has raised for volleyball and the amount of time he has given to everyone for free. I hope everyone will come out and help us celebrate all that he has done for the sport of volleyball."
ABOUT THE MATCHUPS
Long Beach State is 21-0 against this weekend's opponents all-time although it has never faced Campbell or Army. LBSU leads the series with Idaho 17-0 and has defeated San Francisco all four times the two programs have met, including an exciting five-setter last year.
JACKSON REACH 1,000 DIGS
Senior libero Tyler Jackson became the 14th 49er to record 1,000 career digs last weekend. She needs just 56 more to enter into the top-10 all-time at LBSU. She was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Illini Classic.
MACKIE STARTS STRONG
Senior Bre Mackie led the Beach in its first two matches with nine kills in each match. The right side hitter is currently tied for the team lead with 2.30 kills per set.
LBSU ENDS ILLINI CLASSIC ON STRONG NOTE
LBSU reversed its fortunes in the third match after seeing its fourth late lead disappear in the first set. The Beach led late in two sets against No. 11 Illinois and once against No. 20 UNC but couldn't convert the late leads into set wins and the same pattern emergend in the first set against Southern Illinois. However, the Beach left no doubt the rest of the way as they went on to win the next three sets against SIU by a combined score of 75-47.
