FULLERTON, Calif. - Chisom Okpala had 10 kills and led the Long Beach State women's volleyball team to a dominating sweep of Cal State Fullerton. The Beach (12-4, 2-0 Big West) hit .365 as a team to key the 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 sweep.
Okpala's 10 kills on just 11 swings with no errors keyed the hot hitting night for the Beach. The senior middle blocker hit .909, which is a career-best mark, and tied Nique Crump for the second-best mark in Long Beach State history. Crump had the same stat line (10 kills, no errors, 11 attempts) against UC Irvine in 1997.
Alex Reid also had nine kills and Bre Mackie added in eight to lead the Beach in the sweep. On the defensive end, Tyler Jackson led the back row with 14 digs and the Beach front row put up seven blocks. Jenelle Hudson and Ashley Murray each had three block assists while Sophie Bukovec came away with two solo stuffs.
None of the three sets were ever in much doubt as Long Beach State pulled away in the early stages of all three. A 4-4 tie in the first quickly turned into a 13-6 Beach lead and continued to grow until Alex Reid put down the clinching kill. The Beach served up five of its eight aces in the opening set and hit a scorching .423 to fuel the runs.
The second set was controlled nearly start to finish by the visiting Beach as it led 5-1 at the start and later grew the lead to 12-3. Okpala was 4-for-4 in the set and LBSU put up three blocks. Okpala put down another four kills and the Beach hit .345 while holding the Titans (6-9, 0-2 Big West) to .129 hitting. The 49ers trailed 3-1 at the start but quickly turned that into a 13-6 lead and cruised to the sweep.
The Beach returns to Walter Pyramid next weekend to face CSUN on Saturday at 7 p.m.
