THE MATCHUPS
Long Beach State will open the Big West portion of its schedule at Orange County rivals UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. The Beach (10-4) has a combined 150-13 (84-5 vs. CSF and 66-8 vs. UCI) all-time record against the two programs. LBSU has won the last nine straight against UCI and 63 of the last 64 meetings with Cal State Fullerton.
THE TEAM
The Beach reached 10 wins in its nonconference schedule for the first time since 2010 with its win over Bakersfield on Friday. It will look to keep rolling into its conference schedule this week. LBSU has won at least 11 matches in every Big West season since 1988. It has had two win streaks of five matches this year but saw its latest streak, which included 14 consecutive set wins, snapped on Saturday.
THE PLAYERS
Senior captain Tyler Jackson moved into a six-rotation, outside hitter role on Saturday and turned in a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs in the five-set loss to Oregon State. Fellow senior captain Chelsea Cabrajac filled the libero role with career-high 21 digs. Senior Bre Mackie set multiple career-highs last week with a career-best of 17 kills agasint Bakersfield on a career-best .615 hitting. Her eight digs against Bakersfield were also a career-high. Senior Chisom Okpala is on a hot streak as of late with six consecutive matches over .300 hitting. In the current run she is hitting .410 and has double digit kills in four of the six matches.
