Jackson Reaches Career Milestone In Four-Set Win

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After a heartbreaking first set, the attack starting clicking for the Long Beach State women's volleyball team in a 24-26, 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 win over Southern Illinois. Senior libero Tyler Jackson reached a career milestone with her 1,000th career dig in the second set.
Jackson became the 14th player in Long Beach State history to reach the career milestone with her sixth dig of the night. She ended the match with seven digs and a pair of assists to help the Beach (1-2) to its first win of 2014.
The first set brought more heartbreak for a team that had plenty already this weekend. The Beach was in line to serve up set point before the Salukis (0-3) called timeout. A service error, and attack error and an over pass off a serve turned the tables completely around as SIU snuck away with the 26-24 win.
After that it was all Beach. LBSU went on to dominate the rest of the match and never left much doubt in the result. The 49ers hit .348 in the second set while limiting SIU to .071 hitting in the set. The Beach hitters started going off and four would eventually reach double figures.
Joy Miley led the way with 12 kills on .364 hitting while Sophie Bukovec and Alex Reid each pounded down 11 kills. Chisom Okpala added in 10 kills on .348 hitting. Bre Mackie had five kills but came up with two solo blocks and five block assists to go along with her first collegiate ace.
The Beach domination reached into the second set as they limited SIU to a -.111 hitting percentage. Only Andrea Estrada reached double digits with 10 kills but also hit in the negatives.
Long Beach State continued rolling into the fourth to post a .291 hitting percentage in the match. They also set up eight blocks compared to just five from SIU. Their eight blocks helped limit the Salukis to .080 hitting.
The Beach is home for the next two weeks starting with a 7 p.m. match against Idaho on Sep. 4 in Walter Pyramid.
