LONG BEACH - Freshman Ashley Gonzales scored in the 18th minute and that proved to be all the Long Beach State women's soccer team would need in a 1-0 exhibition win over CSUN Saturday evening at George Allen Field.
Nearly midway through the first half, Gonzales collected the ball just inside the box after a cross was deflected by a Matador defender. She then drilled a shot to the lower right corner to put LBSU on top at the 17:29 mark.
The 49er defense held strong, allowing only four shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashton McKeown totaled two saves in the win.
The Beach held a 9-to-4 advantage in shot attempts and also took six more corner kicks than the visitors (7-to-1). Gonzales and fellow freshman Jessica Vincent finished with two shots each.
Long Beach State officially opens the 2014 season next weekend when it heads to San Diego for the USD Tournament. LBSU is set to face USC in the opener at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, before returning to the pitch for an 11:30 a.m. showdown with No. 20 Georgetown on Sunday, Aug. 24.
