IRVINE, Calif. - Cameron Pongs had a monster week at the plate and was rewarded with the Big West Hitter of the Week award on Monday. Pongs helped Long Beach State to an upset series win over previously top-ranked Cal Poly last weekend.
The weekly award is the first in Pongs brief time with the Dirtbags. He is the third Long Beach State player to earn a weekly honor from the Big West Conference this season, joining Richard Prigatano and Josh Frye.
Pongs, who is also a lefty reliever for the Dirtbags, went off last week in starting all four games as the Dirtbags designated hitter. The junior lefty hit .571 on the week with three doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Pongs opened the week with a 2-for-3 performance at San Diego with a sacrifice fly. He opened up the series with Cal Poly by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles on Friday and scoring one run in loss. On Saturday, Pongs second 3-for-4 day at the plate contributed to the Dirtbags' 7-2 win over one of the nation's top-ranked teams. His single in the fourth brought in the first of three runs in the inning that blew open the game, giving the Dirtbags a 6-0 lead at the time.
With the .571 week at the plate, Pongs upped his batting average to an even .400 in his limited opportunities this season.
Cal State Fullerton's Thomas Eshelman was selected as the Pitcher of the Week for the Big West.
The Dirtbags will look to keep their momentum going this week with four home games. They will host Pepperdine on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then will host Cal State Fullerton in a three-game weekend series at Blair Field.
