LUBBOCK, Texas - Long Beach State's freshman shortstop Garrett Hampson was one of 35 college shortstops named to the initial watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, the College Baseball Foundation released over the weekend.
Hampson leads the Dirtbags in several offensive categories. His .325 batting average, 29 runs scored, and .420 slugging percentage all are tops among the Dirtbags this season. He also smacked his team-leading 11th double last weekend in the Dirtbags series win over top-ranked Cal Poly.
Hampson has also made some dazzling plays at shortstop and owns a steady .957 fielding percentage. He has started in all 41 games at shortstop in his first year at the Beach and has brought fans to their feet with his range and instincts on the field.
Hampson is one of three Big West shortstops included in the initial watch list, joining Cal Poly's Peter Van Gansen and UC Santa Barbara's Peter Maris. The list includes 35 of the nation's top shortstops. Hampson is one of nine freshmen on the list.
The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas.
