SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Long Beach State took a two-run lead into the ninth inning but couldn't hold on as San Diego rallied for three runs to walkoff with the 4-3 win. Ryan Millison gave a quality start on the mound in allowing just one run through six innings.
When Millison left the game after six strong innings, the Dirtbags (18-20) were leading 3-1. They were the first to score with a couple of runs in the third. With runners on the corners, Richard Prigatano beat out an infield single as Garrett Hampson scored from third for the game's first run.
Michael Hill was intentionally walked to load the bases after a double steal and Cameron Pongs cashed in the opportunity with a sacrifice fly. Hampson singled in Colton Vaughn in the fourth to add to the lead.
The Toreros (26-14) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Andrew Daniel doubled and later scored on Jesse Jenner's single. From there, the pitching and defense took over. The Dirtbags cut down two runners trying to take third to help keep the lead at 3-1.
Millison went six strong innings and allowed just the one run on five hits. Logan Lombana pitched a scoreless seventh while striking out two to set up Kyle Friedrichs.
The Dirtbags had runners in scoring position with two outs in the eighth and ninth but couldn't add to their lead, setting up USD's late inning heroics. Drew Jacobs was a big reason for that as the rarely used pitcher threw 4.2 innings in relief and allowed just two hits while keeping the Dirtbags off the board.
In the ninth, the Toreros bats caught fire for four hits to plate the three runs. Kyle Holder doubled and moved up to third when the Toreros caught a break. Friedrichs fanned Josh Goossen-Brown but a passed ball allowed him to reach first while Holder moved up to third. The next two batters singled to load the bases and close the gap to 3-2 before Austin Baily delivered the game-winning hit into right, plating the tying and game-winning runs.
Hampson, Vaughn and Cameron Pongs each had two hits for Long Beach State.
The Dirtbags return home this weekend for a three-game series with No. 1 Cal Poly. The first game will be at Blair Field on Friday at 6 p.m.
