IRVINE, Calif. - Senior right hander Josh Frye was selected as the Big West Pitcher of the Week after his career-best performance in Friday's win over No. 17 UC Santa Barbara. Frye tossed a complete game shutout in leading the Dirtbags to the 1-0 win. This is the first-ever weekly award for Frye.
In his first-ever start in his hometown, Frye delivered the best performance of his career. He needed only 91 pitches to complete all nine innings and get his first shutout. He limited the Gauchos to just five hits while plunking a batter but not walking anyone. The scoreless start was the third consecutive scoreless start for Frye and extended his scoreless streak to 25 consecutive innings.
Frye jumped into the rotation for the first time in his career at the start of the Big West season and has made a case to stay there. The Dirtbags are 4-0 in games that the Long Beach native starts on the mound. Frye is 3-0 with a no-decision in his first start at Cal State Northridge and owns a 0.96 ERA in a starting role.
The Dirtbags head down to San Diego on Monday for a 6 p.m. contest with the Toreros but return home this weekend to host No. 3 Cal Poly.
