LONG BEACH - Sophomore Kevin Lee fired a 63 in the final round of the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic to capture individual medalist honors and lead Long Beach State to fourth at Virginia Country Club.
Lee completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 8-under-par 202 as he held onto a one-stroke lead over Kyler Sauer of Cal State Northridge and three shots over Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton, ranked 36th by Golfstat. This was Lee's first career tournament win as his score of 63 tied a course record and marked a career-low for the native from La Palma.
Lee's scorecard from the final round was bogey-free as he started the morning from the 10th tee, posting four consecutive birdies from Nos. 12-15 and one additional birdie on the par-5 18th to complete the back-nine at 5-under. As he made the turn, Lee recorded five consecutive pars before picking up two more birdies for the round on Nos. 6 and 7 to finish the front-nine at 2-under.
LBSU posted the lowest score of the tournament with a 10-under 270 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 2-under 838. The 49ers finished just one shot behind Arizona and UC Santa Barbara tie for second and two strokes behind team champion Minnesota.
Junior JJ Holen shot a 72 with three birdies for a 1-over 211 to tie for 16th, while sophomore Daniel Chian carded a 71 for a 6-over to tie for 35th.
Junior Kevin Techakanokboon and freshman Agostino Milazzo tied for 41st at 7-over. Both players posted their best rounds of the tournament as Techakonokboon fired a career-low 67 with five birdies and Milazzo recorded a 69 with three birdies for the day.
LBSU returns to action Mar. 20-22, for the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
